Sciatica may occur when pressure is placed on the sciatic nerve. Common causes include injury, ruptured disc and spinal stenosis (narrowing of the spinal canal).

Osteoarthritis can cause the nerve tunnel between discs to narrow, contributing to sciatic pain.

Nerve pain radiates from the gluteus maximus (buttock area) and hip down the back of the leg to the foot.

Symptoms may include:

  • pain in the lower back, thigh, calf and ankle
  • numbness or weakness in the leg
  • pins and needles.

Although pain can be severe, most sciatica cases resolve within 6-12 weeks.
