Osteoporosis causes bones to become weak, fragile and susceptible to fractures.  A fracture after a minor fall is usually the first indication of osteoporosis, due to it being a slow developing condition.

Early signs of osteoporosis to look out for include:

  • Stooped posture
  • Gradual height ‘shrinkage’
  • Back pain caused by a collapsed or fractured vertebra
  • A sneeze or cough may fracture a rib in a person

Osteoporosis normally doesn’t cause pain, unless a fracture occurs. Spinal fractures are the most common cause of chronic pain for people with osteoporosis.
