Multiple sclerosis affects the central nervous system, interfering with nerve impulses within the brain, spinal cord and optic nerves. Damage to the protective sheath of nerve fibres interferes with messages sent via the nervous system around the body.
Most people are diagnosed between ages of 20 and 40, however younger and older people may be affected. Women are three times more likely to be diagnosed with the condition.
MS affects people differently, and symptoms may come and go. Managing symptoms is the only treatment.
Symptoms may include:
- balance issues
- constipation
- co-ordination issues
- dizziness
- eyesight problems
- fatigue
- heat sensitivity
- memory changes (concentration, reasoning)
- muscle spasms and/or weakness
- pins & needles
- vertigo
